Dg took a leisurely shower, soaking in as much warmth as possible. She was exceedingly glad that Cain had put his foot down and refused to let her go to work. She would never admit that to him of course, and tomorrow she would have to apologize to Carter, but for now, it was worth it. She would enjoy her day off and savor each and every second.
Stepping from the shower, she wrapped herself in a large fleecy towel that this side was so famous for. At least this day off meant time to seduce Cain.
*~*~*
"Dg, next time you decide to have a midnight escapade, could you have it on a night with better weather?" Jeb whined, seconds after he went on a sneezing fit.
"Sorry, Jeb." Her voice came out hoarse and raspy. The idea in itself had been stupid, but the consequences were well worth the feverish fits.
Cain had been in bed with her. All night. Sans shirt. Unfortunately, she had been unconscious the entire time. Jeb winced when he heard her voice.
"You sound just about as bad as you look."
"Thanks a lot, that’s what every girl longs to hear." She moaned, slumping in her chair. Cain, who had of course been trailing her around everywhere, leaned down to whisper in her ear.
"Don’t listen to the boy…… you look gorgeous." He sat beside her with a satisfied grin, while Dg furiously bushed.
How come you compliment her just to see that pretty blush stain her cheeks... and yet you refuse to bed her? Do you see something wrong with this picture?
Jeb smiled knowingly at this exchange, exiting the kitchen and pulling the recently arrived Azkadellia with him.
"Cain, can we go for a picnic today?" Dg inquired, eyes lit with excitement. Cain looked at her though narrowed eyes with a speculative expression.
"Why?"
Dg’s face fell. Maybe this just wasn’t worth it. The man really couldn’t be swayed.
"Never mind." She muttered and stood, preparing to leave.
Stop her! STOP HER! Don’t be such a jerk!
Cain reached out and grabbed her wrist her wrist.
"Dg, wait... I would love to go on a picnic with you today." He cooed softly. Dg didn’t meet his eyes.
"Don’t feel obligated Cain, that only makes it worse. I know you don’t want to go and the only reason you’re saying yes is out of pity."
Look what you did, you asshole! Make it up to her! Kiss her…… or... or just do SOMETHING! Bring her smile back!
Feeling bad enough as it was, he didn’t need his inner horny voice raging at him. Abandoning his usual rule of no touching, he drew her closer so she was standing in-between his legs. His thumb moved back and forth soothingly on her palm.
"I don’t lie Dg, I would love to go on a picnic with you. You just caught me by surprise at first. When would you like to leave?"
"I changed my mind, I really don’t want to go. Honestly." Pulling herself from his grasp she attempted to escape, his nearness was driving her mad. Cain was having none of it. Capturing her by the waist, he kept her stationary.
"No changing your mind. We’ll leave in about an hour, so I suggest you get dressed. But I’m warning you, if you start another one of your coughing jags, I’m bringing you right back."
Dg couldn’t stop the smile that bloomed on her face. Pouncing, she hugged him tightly and then ran out of the kitchen to get ready.
*~*~*
Surprising even himself, Cain snagged her hand as they walked in the bright sunshine. A basket was hanging from his left hand, while his right hand was pleasantly filled with Dg’s. He had never felt better.
"This looks like the perfect spot." Dg announced. Cain grabbed the blanket from her and spread it out before settling down on it. Patting the space beside him, Cain waited for Dg to join him.
"You really didn’t have to come, Cain." She whispered. Cain brushed her bangs behind her ear.
"I wanted to. Plus, I had Jeb pack this huge lunch for us and we don’t want it to go to waste." He patted the basket. Dg beamed.
"Sometimes Cain, I think you’re bipolar." She realized the error of her ways when Cain fell into confusion.
"Bi-polar?"
It was hilariously funny watching him try to wrap him head around the word ‘bipolar’. She probably shouldn’t tease him like that, especially since he didn’t know what she was saying.
"Never mind. You’re being sweet Cain and really it’s not necessary. I know you took me out here out of pity." Dg looked away.
Look what you’ve done. Now she thinks we only pity like her, and the truth is you’re just a stubborn ass!!!
Cain sighed. He was sick of trying to resist, and he didn’t want Dg to think she was undesirable. Quite the opposite, actually. So what if he was going to go to hell for this……
YES!!!! Oh gods, YES!!! You’ve finally come to your damn senses!!!!!
Cain shifted closer to Dg who was looking everywhere but at him.
"Dg. Dg, look at me." Cain placed two fingers on the underside of her jaw to prompt her to look at him. Reluctantly Dg turned her face and met his eyes.
"What?"
"I would never take a woman out on a picnic out of damned pity. I don’t have that much patience." With those final words, he leaned the rest of the way forward and claimed her lips.
FINALLY!!!! OH, OH gods she tastes good! See! See! See! What did I tell you?
Dg fell back on the blanket with Cain following closely behind. Whether out of destiny or his magical hands, Dg’s shirt rode up exposing her stomach to Cain’s inquisitive and starving mouth.
"Wyatt." Dg groaned. "Do you know how long I’ve waited for this?"
Cain temporarily stopped his deluge of kisses that had been raining down on her stomach.
"Not nearly as long as I have." With that he turned his attentions back to her porcelain skin. His tongue circled around her belly button and then slipped inside to lave it sensuously. Dg’s hips arched up and of the blanket. "CAIN!"
"Oh, Dg…… this is only the beginning."
*~*~*
Dg lay in her Tin Man's arms, comfortable beyond belief, as the suns began to fall from the sky. Cain was breathing steadily as he slept, and each time he inhaled or exhaled, she would rise and fall with him.
Dg was positive that this is what heaven was made of.
Cain had been her first, and when he confessed that he had nearly stopped his delightful assault, dear Gods she was glad she hadn't. It had been perfect. Beyond perfect. Pure bliss. He had been slow and tender and had pushed her over the edge countless times. He hadn't gotten angry that she knew absolutely nothing about lovemaking; he had simply enjoyed teaching her.
Flipping over so she was on her side and eye-to-eye with Cain, she smiled. He was the epitome of perfection. Her finger trailing over his lips she waited for him to wake. His lips opened receptively as he placed a kiss on the finger she was using to trace his lips.
"I was comfortable, Princess."
"You were tempting," Dg grinned, nuzzling closer to his warm body. His arm tightened around her waist his eyes remaining closed.
"Hmmm." He murmured still mostly asleep. Dg pressed a soft kiss on his eyebrow.
"We should probably head back. It's getting dark."
"Do we have to?" Cain mumbled again but this time one of his eyes popped open. Dg laughed, the sound warming Cain from inside out.
"Yes." Wiggling her way out of his embrace, she searched around for her clothes. They had both managed to find their clothes and start pulling some on, when they heard someone yelling and running in their direction. Cain, shirtless, pushed Dg behind him. Dg all the while struggled to button her shirt the rest of the way up. "Shit." She mumbled her fingers not cooperating.
Not seconds later, Jeb skidded to a halt in front of them. Jeb barely seem to notice that they were half naked and gaping at him.
"Jeb, what the hell?" Cain growled quietly, hoping that Dg was dressed…… or at least mostly covered. Jeb’s face was deathly pale and he was shaking from head to toe. He was trying to speak but his incoherent words weren’t making much sense. Dg finally managing to button her blouse stepped out from behind Cain. Clasping Jeb’s shoulders she shook him back and forth a few times.
"Spit it out, Jeb. What’s wrong?"
"I’m so sorry Dg." The sorrow in Jeb’s eyes was crippling. Dg stumbled back a step.
"For what?" She queried, horror filling her. Jeb’s hand landed lightly on her face.
"A messenger just arrived from the OZ. The Queen-" Jeb swallowed thickly.
"Yes?" Dg prompted, the color in her face retreating.
"And her consort were-"
"Please Jeb." She begged. "Please just tell me. I can’t take this anymore." Cain’s arm wrapped around her waist to steady her.
"Jeb!" Cain barked.
"……Were both shot this morning by longcoats, presumably. The Queen was killed instantly, the consort died mid-afternoon; there was absolutely nothing the doctors could do. Matthews was reportedly working for hours, even when the rest of the doctors told him it was no use." Jeb swallowed again. "I am so sorry, Dg. So very, very sorry."
"No, no it can’t be true." Dg gasped nearly hyperventilating. Grabbing her stomach, she tried to breath past the choking tears. Cain was unsure of what to do besides keep her from collapsing. Bringing her into his arms, he held her as she cried. Jeb briefly met Cain’s eyes.
"Cain." Dg wheezed. Cain’s arms tightened around her waist as he drug her closer to his warm body.
"I’m here."
"Dear god, Cain their dead." She breathed before the eyes rolled back in her head and she went limp in his arms.
*~*~*
Dg sat next to Cain silently as Az cried softly in Jeb’s arms. Dg could only imagine what her sister was going through. She knew that her sister would blame herself, another burden added to her already heavy load. Shifting closer she rested her head against Cain’s shoulder.
"What do we do know?" Dg asked softly. Cain began to rub soft circles on her back as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
"We have to head back to the Oz in the morning. From there…… honestly, I don’t know." He sighed. Dg gazed up at him.
"It shouldn’t be this way."
"I know. Life doesn’t always play out the way it should."" Cain played with one of her curly locks. Dg sighed and stood, making her way to the kitchen. Tears stung at her eyes. She needed something to drink. Desperately. Anything to numb the pain. Banging around in the cupboards, she searched for some kind of alcohol.
All she found was a damn bottle of wine.
Grabbing for the bottle she muttered, "This will just have to do. Damn robots can’t keep decent drinks in the house." Popping open the top she guzzled. Didn’t sip, didn’t pour in a cup, didn’t even consider the ramifications, just gulped. She hadn’t realized that Cain had followed her.
"Dg, what the hell are you doing?" Cain demanded to know. Dg looked back at him but kept a tight grasp on the bottle.
"I’m...what do you call it? Drinking my pain away."
"Come to bed, Dg."
"Why?"
"Because we have a big day tomorrow."
"So……" Dg muttered, taking another long swig out of the bottle. Cain sighed. Stalking forward, he scooped her into his arms. Tramping up the stairs he headed to her room. Dg looked up at him silently, still cradling the bottle in her arms. After Cain laid her down on the bed, Dg curled into a ball. Another sigh, and Cain kicked off his boots and shrugged out of his duster. He lay down on the bed next to her. Dg turned and snuggled into his arms. With wide eyes full of tears, she looked up at him.
"All I have left is Az, you, and this damn bottle of wine."
