DG tapped her foot impatiently on the gleaming floor. She was to make her official re-debut back into O.Z society next week. This meant an appearance at a royal ball surrounded by thousands of strangers. All knew who she was, but she didn’t have the slightest idea of where she knew these people. To make matters worse, she had to learn to dance a waltz, the official dance of the royal court.

She looked down at her royal blue dress, the light, floating material swirled around as she spun. She felt like she was a child again, only in a more grown up uniform. The distraction kept her mind off the fact that she felt pretty useless and awkward out of her normal attire of jeans and a sweater. She looked at herself in one of the many mirrors that lined the walls of the ballroom. With a shrug of approval she smoothed down the knee length fabric and pushed her hair back off of her bare shoulders.

DG craned her neck to see around a potted plant as the heard the door open. She stood on her tiptoes awaiting the sight of the guest and came back down quickly on her heels at the sight of Cain. Not quite the man she expected to see. Wasn’t he supposed to be doing security type things? She suddenly felt very awkward in her thin, delicate gown and muttered under her breath.

“Tutor is running late.” Cain said, closely followed by Glitch. He stopped short at the sight of DG and blinked a few times. He always found her an attractive person, but she was exceptionally beautiful in that dress. He considered leaving the room to avoid any feelings from blossoming unexpectedly. He cleared his throat. “He said to wait here until he gets here.” He raised his head up and firmly stated.

Glitch saw the disappointment in DG’s face. He frowned and then his face lit up in an instant. Glitch had very few light bulb moments, but when he got one he grasped onto it tightly.

“DG.” He said, pulling on her sleeve like a child. DG looked over at him patiently and waited for him to stop jumping up and down. “Why don’t I teach you the waltz?” His eyes grew larger as DG tried to shrink away.

“I don’t know Glitch.” She said worriedly. Last time he taught her how to do something she nearly set the kitchen on fire. “Besides, I don’t have anyone to dance with. It’s not any fun learning to dance alone.” She said with a shrug. Glitch raised his pointer finger and spun it around the air.

“Not a problem.” He said happily. “We’ll get Cain to do it.” He walked over to Cain and grabbed his arm. Cain tried to jump back but wasn’t quick enough as Glitch’s hand clung to his arm.

“Hey there, whoa there.” Cain smacked Glitch’s hand off his jacket. “I don’t dance.” He looked at Glitch and then to DG. Her small face was filled with sadness, hoping he’d at least attempt to help out.

“Fine.” Cain groaned as he shook off his jacket and threw it on a nearby chair. The last time he danced was many annuals ago, back to when he and Adora got married. He wasn’t sure if he knew how to dance still. He walked over to DG and assumed the position of a waltz, surprised he still knew that. He placed his right hand on her waist, trying not to be too firm for fear he’d hurt her. His left hand extended out and slowly took hold of her hand. DG raised her other hand and placed in on Cain’s shoulder. The two stood there, awkwardly waiting for Glitch to begin his next steps.

DG had a few dance lessons, so she knew somewhat about what she was doing. She’d danced with Tutor before and somehow never had this feeling before. She tapped her foot gently on the marble floor and waited. Glitch began his count off and then the music started a soft and gentle ballad, the perfect song for a waltz. Cain took the first step, leading off with his left foot forward, DG backed on her left foot, allowing Cain to lead her around the floor.

“And 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and you’re doing great Cain just keep your eyes off the floor.” Glitch hopped back to avoid getting swatted at by Cain. He stifled a laugh and kept the count up. Remarkably Cain seemed to glide around the floor with amazing ease and care.

“I had no idea you could waltz.” DG admired. Cain looked down at his feet, but quickly looked up again, afraid Glitch would smack him.

“At the academy we attended balls all the time.” He looked into her eyes. “In between learning to shoot a gun properly and how to track down the bad guys, we were expected to learn how to waltz.” He let her gently out and pulled her back in, allowing her hand to rest gently on his shoulder. It was all so elegant and beautiful. DG was one for stumbles and bumbles around the floor, but with a partner like Cain, she was graceful on the floor.

Glitch took a step back and admired the couple. He noticed Tutor standing in the doorway and scooted towards him, careful not to draw attention. He listened to the music as he closed his eyes and absorb the moment.

“It’s one, two, three.” He whispered to Glitch. Glitch opened his eyes and looked over at him confused. “Not, one and two and three and four.” Glitch cocked his head. “Never mind.” Tutor shook his head and looked towards the dancing couple. “Suddenly, I see it.”

“At a glance?” Glitch asked. He looked towards DG. “She’s radiant.” He admitted with a nod.

“And confident.” Tutor emphasized. “And born to take a chance. I think she will make a wonderful princess. Azkadellia will rule with power and might. DG will help her rule with heart and strength. I taught her well.” Tutor said with a happy nod. He looked over at Glitch, smiling at the happy man.

“I planned it all.” Glitch said with a happy laugh. Tutor nodded again and both men fell silent as the watched DG and Cain glide along the smooth surface. Both were locked eye to eye, ignoring everything else around them. Tutor’s face fell as realization sunk in.

“Oh no,” Tutor ran a hand over his face. “I just forgot. . .” He trailed off. Glitch looked up at the couple and then back to Tutor, confusion filling his face. “Romance.” Tuyor tried to jog Glitch’s broken memory. He gestured out to the couple on the floor. “I just forgot about romance. A young, beautiful woman and an older, handsome man, I should have known.”

“Well, how could you do this?” Glitch said, suddenly very concerned about DG. Tutor looked over at Glitch and glared. Glitch pointed to the couple. “You should have known this would happen. What will the queen say when she finds out. I can’t believe. . .”

“How will we get through this?” Tutor mumbled, ignoring the ramblings of Glitch.

As the song came to a quiet end, Tutor and Glitch turned their attention towards the couple. Cain reluctantly let go of DG’s tiny frame and DG pulled her hands away. The two stared at each other for a moment, neither wanting to take their eyes off each other. Finally Cain cleared his throat and took a step back.

“I have to go check on something.” He said pointing over his shoulder. DG nodded slowly and watched as he turned to leave. DG watched as Cain picked up his coat and hat. Her hand found her heart and pressed into it, willing it to slow down. Glitch watched as Cain brought his own hand to his newly appointed heart, willing it to continue beating. Glitch shook his head, fear welling up inside.

“I never should have let them dance.” He said sadly.
