"Cain?" Dg gasped barely pushing his name past numb lips. "DAMMIT!" Her eyes swerved around looking for any possible escape routes. She could run back to Zane, but she had a feeling he wouldn’t be much help in her current situation. She back peddled slightly watching Cain carefully.

"I told you I would hunt you down Princess."

Dg studied the man she had missed, only slightly of course, and she would only admit she missed him inwardly. He stood stone still and his usually frozen eyes were blazing with anger, and something else she couldn’t quite put her finger on. All in all he was his usual gorgeous self, and it made her feel even more self-conscious. She was under no illusions, she knew exactly what she looked like. Messed up hair, pale as a ghost, slumped because of the pain in her back, dirty, and her clothes were muddy and yes, bloody. He had come at the worst possible time. "Get lost Cain, I don’t need a babysitter."

Cain’s teeth clashed together. "I’m already angry with you kid, let’s not make it worse with your pouting and complaining."

It was worse, so much worse, hearing him say that. Not only did what he say hurt, but that he himself said it. His opinion mattered way to much, and that in itself was a weakness. Wrapping her arms around herself she willed her face to remain impassive. "Don’t call me that." It wasn’t her fault her order came out more as a shriek.

Cain stomped down on the urge to throttle her. "If you weren’t acting like a spoiled brat then there would be no need to call you kid."

Dg ignored the hot poker of agony that speared through her that was making her feel nauseous. "I’m. Not. Going. Back."

"Yes you are."

Dg fumed. "You can’t make me, Cain."

"I found you Dg, your little game is over. Your coming back with me, and that’s the end of this discussion. I found you." He reiterated just in case she didn’t get it the first time.

"Way to state the obvious." Dg muttered looking frantically around for an escape. She felt more then saw Zane come up beside her.

Cain sighed and willed his patience to extend just a little further. He decided he would tell her once again that he had found her, maybe she would get the point. She was returning home. With him. This instant. No complaints. "Dg, I found you."

Dg’s eyes blazed. "No shit sherlock!"

Who was sherlock Cain mused quietly. He doubt Dg would like it if he asked. He had expected her to throw a tantrum, but he didn’t think it would take this long. He had figured she was just trying to make a point, not actually run away. He had even figured she would be mad, but Dg was beyond mad that she had been discovered. The woman before him was fiery spitting mad and ready to attack. Wait a second, he was supposed to be the angry one, but upon seeing her, and that she was actually in one place, all his anger, fear, and worry had been replaced with intense relief. He decided he would deal with Dg first, and then the man beside her. Cain did a double take his head whipping back to connect with what he hoped to god wasn’t her traveling companion. This was all wrong, terribly, horribly, wrong! He willed himself to stand still, and not rush forward grab Dg, and run far far away. "Dg, get over here." Cain ordered his voice hoarse and his hand already reaching for his gun.

"No." Dg turned to Zane and jabbed a thumb in Cain’s general direction. "You see Zane, this is what I have to deal with. Why the hell would I want to go back?" She turned back to Cain to find his gun pointed directly at Zane’s heart. "Cain! Put that away now before you accidently shoot someone!." Dg ordered impatiently.

"Dg, come here now."

Dg would be lying if she said she wasn’t utterly and completely confused. Zane was mutely silent not voicing a single protest that gun was unjustly pointed at him. Fear was leaking into Cain’s eyes, which was even stranger because Cain wasn’t afraid of anything. What the hell was going on? She took a step towards Cain, and then stepped back and right in front of Zane. Zane immediately moved her to his side out of the path of Cain’s gun. "Zane, what’s going on?"

Dg!" Cain roared his eyes wide with horror. "Please, please come here."

Zane looked down at her his eyes melting with sorrow. "Go on Dg."

Now she was beyond just confused, but she didn’t have time to think before Zane was pushing her forward gently, and at some unidentifiable point he decided he had pushed her close enough and Cain decided it was safe to collect her. Cain reached out, grabbed her wrist, and yanked her against him. He took a second to breath in her scent, and run his eyes over her making sure she was okay. Satisfied she was all right for the time being he shifted her to his side, and trapped her under his left arm. His gun hand never quivered, but the arm holding Dg did. Cain met her eyes for a brief second his eyes tumbling with tumultuous emotions then his eyes snapped back to Zane’s, but she had caught sight of the murderous glint in her Tin Man’s eyes.

"Cain, what’s going on?" A slight quiver laced her words and Dg detested that sign of fear.

Cain ignored her. "If you so much as laid a hand on her-" Cain growled.

Zane was silent for a second wondering what the quickest path to death was. He had accepted death, and he knew right where to poke Cain to make him shoot with out second thoughts. He had had enough of Cain’s generosity. He spread his lips into a malicious grin. "She tastes exquisite."

Cain was ready to rip the man’s head off, and if Dg wasn’t standing under his arm he probably would have done just that. He was shaking with raw anger and he felt Dg poking him in the side since that’s all she could maneuver in his steel grip.

"What did Zane ever do to you?"

Cain’s eyes froze all primal anger hidden. "I won’t know what the hell he led you to believe, and I have no idea how you didn’t recognize him. The man standing in front of us is Zero."

Dg’s face bleed of color and without Cain’s support she was sure she would have collapsed to the ground. "Zero?"

Cain’s face hardened when he look at Zero. "Say goodbye."

Dg tried jerking his arm so that the bullet would miss, but Cain never missed. Zero staggered and then collapsed crimson blood pouring. Dg felt like she was trapped in a slow motion movie, and no matter that she begged her body to more she was incapable of actually moving. She wasn’t sure how she did it, but she ripped away from Cain and fell to he knees next to Zero. Cradling his head she ignored Cain who was trying to pull her away. "Why?" She gasped. She didn’t want to feel the anguish that was shooting through her, a pain that had nothing to do with her back. After all this was Zero, Cain’s mortal enemy, a man she despised, a man who had done nothing but kill and destroy. But the man’s who head lay in her lap wasn’t Zero, to her he was Zane.

"Deserve..to die." Zero sucked in air. "Don’t punish...Cain..you....love.....him...your both just....to stubborn."

"Your not going to die." Dg murmured trying to cycle her magic into him, but he was losing blood to fast. She was only draining herself, but she refused to give up. Cain finally got the message she wasn’t ready to live. Even Cain, a man who had yet to realize he had a heart, had some pity tucked away. He stood right behind her his hands on her shoulders giving her silent comfort.

Cain didn’t regret shooting Zero, what he regretted was the fact that Zero had wiggled his way into her to big heart, and by him shooting Zero it was causing his Dg pain. Zero didn’t deserve any part of her, but somehow he had earned it. Was it possible he made a mistake in shooting him? He had had mercy the first time, why couldn’t he control himself the second time?

Why? Oh, he knew why. Cause Zero had goaded him in precisely the right way. Zero had kissed his princess. That was what had snapped his carefully constructed control.

Dg rested her forehead against Zero’s. "I can save you, you just have to fight."

"Give...up...it’s only hurting you."

Dg sobbed. "No. NO!"

"Cain."

Cain’s attention was diverted by the whispering of his name. He crouched fighting the urge to strangle. "What?"

"Get her out...of here..then come back....have to say....something."

Glitch, who had been a silent specter the entire time, helped Cain wrestle Dg away. Using hidden strength he kept Dg in his arms as Cain went back to Zero’s side.

Zero’s face was pale and beaded with sweat. He kept an unsteady hand against his wound. "I..don’t blame...you..t-take care of...her."

Cain felt uncharacteristically sad and partially guilty. He shouldn’t, but he did. "I swear I will."

"You...stubborn asses..just....marry her...already."

"What are you talking about?

"Don’t....lie...to...dying....man."

"I’m years older than her, and we don’t feel for each other that way."

"E-excuses...you....love her." Zero took one last gasp and then his body shuddered. The fire in his eyes faded, and his face relaxed into a peaceful mask. Cain was glad he had finally found what Zero had been looking for. Peace.

Now he had to deal with Dg. He turned from the dead man to find her sobbing in Glitch’s arms. He knew she was never going to forgive him.

Nudging Glitch away he took possession of the hysterical Dg. Resting her head against his strong, chiseled chest she gasped for much needed air. "I’m s-sorry."

"It’s my fault, sweetheart, not yours." He went rigid realizing he had called her sweetheart. Half of him hoped she had noticed and the other half was terrified that she had.

"I....shouldn’t...care. Can you f-forgive me?" She tilted her head back and looked into his crystal eyes, her face damp and her eyes wet.

Cain gently wiped away her tears with his thumbs. "There is nothing you need to be sorry for."

She finally relaxed against him, and Cain idly observed they were a perfect fit. He rubbed circles on her back, but every time he did she would knock his hands away. She didn’t seem to mind her hands on her waist or hips, just her back. He anchored his hands on her hips and asked, "Why do you keep shifting my hands from your back?" He only asked because he was concerned that she didn’t want him touching her.

"My back is tender from yesterday and the lightest touch hurts like the dickens."

"Why is it tender?"

Uh oh. Not something she should have mentioned, Cain was going to be furious. "I got shot."

Cain went whiter then a sheet. "You got...what?"

"I don’t want to talk about it." She said softly wrapping her arms tighter around him so that he couldn’t pull her away from him to question her further. The tears were ready to come again, and she hated herself for showing this kind of weakness.

Cain tried to trample the panic, but it wasn’t working very well. "We’ll stay here tonight, and head back first thing tomorrow morning. We’ll go slow so we don’t aggravate your back further."

Dg didn’t comment as he swung her into his arms, and she felt herself start to cry again. It wasn’t the pain in her back, or the strange pain of Zero’s death, it was the agonizing pain that she knew she wasn’t going home tomorrow. The fact that she was once again going to have to leave Cain.

Yet the pain wasn’t going to stop her because there was no way she was returning home. She was just going to have to live with the pain swirling inside of her.

"Shhh, honey, I’m here." The endearment was purposeful this time.

Dg remained in Wyatt Cain’s arms until she had cried herself into an exhausted sleep, but with her last coherent thought she knew nothing was going to stop her from leaving. Not even her tender Tin Man.
