"What happened to Dg?" Glitch questioned as Cain arrived back in camp carrying the unconscious Dg.

"She tried to escape and managed to trip. Her head’s bleeding and her face is all scraped up. You any good at first aid zipper head?"

Glitch grimaced but stepped closer. "Yes, actually. Set her down somewhere Cain and let’s see what I can do."

Dg muttered something incoherent seconds before her eyes fluttered open. "Glitch?"

"Hey doll. You’re not looking so hot."

Dg laughed slightly but it ended as more of a groan. "Understatement Glitch, a vast understatement."

Glitch smiled. "Perhaps. Close your eyes doll face this is going to hurt."

*~*~*

Dg sat cushioned against Cain as she stared blindly at the snapping flames. "What am I going to do, Cain?"

Cain was silent for a brief second. "I’m not quite sure. We have to go back, but maybe we can talk to your mother-"

Dg sat up abruptly sending her head into a sickening whirl pool. Squeezing her eyes shut she waited for the dizziness to pass. "She’s smothering me Cain. In the mean time Az, who deserves the throne, is being cast into the cold. My mother has no idea what she is doing. Az is swiftly going down hill, and there is only so much I can do."

"The Queen-"

Dg glared at him. "Stop defending her Cain. You can see as well as I do what she is doing to Az."

Cain took a deep breath. "Princess none of this is going to be solved with you running away. You’ve made your point to your mother, now let’s go back and actually fix this."

"Stop being such a damn boy scout."

"Dg-"

"I’m serious Cain. Break the rules. Wanna go back? Fine. We’ll go back, collect Az, and then we can be on our way again. It really is perfect."

"And after we get Az where the hell do you propose we go?"

"Home." Dg said with a soft sigh.

"Home?"

"Yes. Home. Back to the other side."

"And how do you propose we get on living there?"

"Well, Az and I can get jobs at the dinner."

"And what do you propose I do?"

Dg sighed. "Your not coming Cain. The OZ is your home, Jeb is here, and you would never be comfortable in Kansas."

"You think I’m just going to let you waltz out of my life again? Are you out of your mind? Your not leaving me!" Cain growled.

Dg’s head tilted slightly as she took in her disgruntled, and pain stricken, Tin Man. He was right of course. She couldn’t go home. She was going to have to be a grown up. "Calm down Cain. I’ll go back to the Queen. I’ll participate in her damn Queen lessons, but the second I get wind of you leaving for more than a day I swear I will disappear."

Cain smiled and it took DG’s breath away. "Perfect."

*~*~*

The arrived back at the tower in record time. When Cain helped Dg dismount she stood gazing at the bleakness of it before she started slowly forward. She saw the Queen standing and waiting but Dg didn’t stop she continued forward ignoring the queen all together. At first she had been ecstatic to find her long lost mother. The enthusiasm had bled away. Fairy tale endings were false hoods. And the Queen was not her mother. Never would be. She was an ice queen with little mercy and no emotion.

Cain watched as Dg brushed past her mother, and head into the tower. The Queen just stood there not moving an inch her face cold as granite. Frowning slightly he followed Dg, but was stopped by the Queen’s voice. "If my daughter does not begin to follow the rules you and your son will be shipped away before you can say your full name."

Cain remained quiet a second. What did you say to that after all? What did he have to lose? "Why would Dg work to conform to your standards, and the social expectations, when she is born to stand out and shine? Perhaps you should rethink you carefully laid plans. If your excuse me your majesty." Cain didn’t wait for the Queen’s wrath but continued after DG.

*~*~*

Azkadellia knocked softly on Dg’s door and waited patiently for her sister to give her entrance.

"Go away!"

"It’s me DG." Azkadellia said keeping her voice low.

Dg yanked open the door. "Az!"

Az smiled. "Heard Cain dragged you back, and I can’t say I mind."

Dg’s smile faltered. "I’m sorry I left you Az." She sobbed. "I’m sorry I left you all by yourself with her!"

Az gathered Dg in her arms and used magic to shut the door behind her. "Don’t cry honey. I understand why you left, I only regret I was unaware. I would have come with you."

Dg clutched her long lost sister to her. Az was one of the only good things about the Oz. Az, Glitch, Cain, and Raw. The only joy in this world gone mad. "I can’t find Cain." She whispered brokenly. "I’ve looked everywhere."

Az closed her eyes with a moan. "That’s what I’ve come here to tell you. The queen sent him away before father had a chance to stop her. Cain along with Jeb and Raw were all sent away. No one knows where."

Dg looked at her wide eyed for a brief agonizing moment. "Gone?"

Az couldn’t think of a thing to say. What did you tell a woman when she realized her mother had sent away every good thing she had in her life."

"All of them..gone?"

Az nodded her head slightly. A howl of inhuman pain was ripped from Dg’s pain minutes before she sunk to the floor.

*~*~*

Dg woke up to find herself nestled in her sisters arms in her room. Shifting slightly she sat up disoriented. When she felt her sister stir beside her she asked the dreaded question. "Are the really gone? Or was it a nightmare?"

"I’m sorry Dg." Instead of the sorrow Az expected to find in Dg’s eyes she found rage.

"She’ thinks she’s won, but she’s wrong. I’ll beat her at her own damn game."

Az frowned. "And who do you expect to do that?"

Dg turned to Az. Az was stunned to find only granite determination. "I won’t show pain. I’ll train to become queen, but so help me I will find Cain. And not even she can stop me."

"I’ll help."

Dg couldn’t bring herself to smile. She felt empty and used. "When I’m done she’ll wish she’d only died."

"Your not going to-"

"No, I won’t kill her. I won’t even hate her. I’ll just beat her."

"What about the Oz?" Az asked dubiously.

"They deserve better than her, and they’ll get better."

"We’ll find him Dg, I swear we will."

"I know."
