3 Annuals Later
Dg eventually learned to stomach the queen but each time she was around her it was an excruciating effort. Dg also learned to lie without even blinking an eye lash. She had never been a very good liar but now she could stand among the best of them. She learned how to school her motions, to keep her face blank with a smile pasted on. She learned how to keep a tight leash on her emotions. She learned how to be have just right in society. She learned diplomacy and manners. She learned customs and history. Her speciality was war tactics. She had sat down with the current head General Kieran and helped him come up with the best way to dispel the rest of the long coats. Dg had become the jewel of the Oz. But the biggest lesson Dg learned was how not to feel.
She kept herself in a careful state of numbness.
The only people she talked to and trusted were Kieran and her sister Az. Kieran had even helped her secretly make contingent plans of what to do when she finally gained the throne. He was one of the only people she trusted. Mostly because he had known Wyatt Cain, and in an odd kind of way reminded her of him. He was protective and at times overbearing, but he also knew when to stop.
Currently Dg stood on the balcony overlooking the Oz. The same balcony her sister had been freed from the witch. Peering over the vastness of the land she narrowed her eyes. Somewhere out there resided Cain, Jeb, and Raw.
"You shouldn’t be out her alone, angel, it’s not safe."
Dg turned slowly and came face to face with the queen. Dg merely arched an eyebrow and smiled tightly. "I’ll leave now." With graceful dignity she swept past her mother.
"I did it for your own good Dg."
Dg stopped but didn’t turn. Apparently her ‘mother’ had gotten her silent message. "I don’t know what your talking about."
"When I sent the Cains and that viewer away. It really was for you."
"If that is what you say then that is how it must be. Since you are so sure it was the right thing then why are we talking about this now?"
The queen sighed softly. "I just want you to know I care, and that all actions I took where for you. I must admit I miss some of the old Dg."
"You sent that Dg away highness. What I am now is your creation."
The queen moved until she was facing her daughter. "Then I must admit I do not regret my actions. You are now ready for the throne."
Dg remained blank face her eyes strangely vacant as she stared at the queen. "Then why are we having this conversation?"
Lavender sighed delicately. "Honestly, I’m not sure."
"May I leave now?"
Lavender sighed once again. "I am your mother, angel. You could call me mother and not your highness."
Dg remained tall and straight shouldered. "You are not my mother. You deactivated her. I’m calling you exactly who you are. May I leave now?" And if perchance this woman had once upon a time been her mother that woman had withered away leaving this twisted bitter corpse of a person.
*~*~*
Az sat next to Dg on the small window seat in Dg’s room. "Dg, now that you have conformed to Lavender’s expectations what are we going to do now?"
"I am taking the throne tomorrow. Queen Lavender has finally seen it fit that she release power and step down. The day after tomorrow when Lavender no longer possesses an ounce of power we’re finding Cain, Raw, and Jeb. We will also be releasing Glitch from the psych ward."
"She’s not just going to sit and watch you undo everything she so painstakingly put in place. She is not going to stay silent as you rip apart the cage she erected around you."
Dg turned expressionless eyes to gaze at Az. "She’s not going to have a choice in the matter."
*~*~*
Dg stood before Lavender’s advisors looking more majestic than any woman should ever look. She had stepped easily into the shoes of Queen’s, but her next move would be sure to bring about anger. "As royal advisors you will all be dismissed. For your loyalty to the former Queen you will be well compensated. Princess Azkadellia, General Kieran, and Ambrose will be my only advisors. I will not have advisors who for any price would gladly betray me. If you do not go immediately you will be forcibly removed." General Kieran stood directly behind her right shoulder punctuating her words.
As expected there was chaos, rage, threats, and even an fist fits. Through it all Dg stood firm. When all the former advisors were ushered out Dg turned to Kieran. "The Oz is still in disarray after the long reign of the witch. Lavender did nothing to fix it besides the little things she allowed you and I to do. It is time to heal the Oz once and for all. Are you ready to help me fix the broken aspects of this land?"
Her head general grinned. "My loyalty lie only with you."
Dg felt a glimmer of a real smile light her face. "We need to fine someone first."
"Cain."
"Yes."
"Where do you think he is?"
"We’ll start our search in the Realm of the Unwanted. Prepare four of your most trusted soldiers that you have no doubt of their loyalty. Only you, I, and these men will know of our mission. We leave at first dawn tomorrow morning."
"You Majesty-"
"Do not attempt to dissuade me because it won’t work."
Kieran smiled at her. "Never ma’am."
*~*~*
Kieran, Dg, and four trusted soldiers of the crown stood looking down the entrance of the Realm of the Unwanted. Much to Dg’s protest she wore a dark black dress and a crimson cloak that hid her completely in shadows.
"Are you sure you want to do this your highness?" One of the soldiers, Garret if she recalled correctly, asked.
"I’ve never been surer in my entire life."
Evading the helping hands she climbed down, and once on solid ground she glanced around. "We’ll break into teams of two. Casually ask around and see what you can dig up. What ever you do don’t raise suspicion."
Kieran placed a hand on her arm. "Are you sure that’s the best idea."
"Stop second guessing me Kieran. A group this big will bring unwanted curiosity. Best idea or not it’s what we’re going to do. I’m not stopping until I find my Tin Man."
Kieran knew better than to argue. "Okay men you heard her. Stay Sharp. I’ll take Que-"
"It’s Dg." She hissed. "Remember where we are."
Kieran grimaced. "Right. Let’s go."
Dg remained vigilant as Kieran and she roamed around. She wasn’t quite sure where to start.
Still not comfortable with calling his Queen by her name he came up with the next best choice. "Milady, do you have any particular place you would like to start?"
Dg frowned slightly. "Not a clue. Let’s just look around and she what we can find. We’ll start asking people when I’m sure no one suspects anything. Maybe we’ll get a lucky break."
After hours of searching around and asking endless amounts of people Dg was just about ready to collapse. It was then she caught sight of a familiar face. Squinting she tried to figure out who exactly she was looking at. Then she realized who it was. Jeb. There the angel was just sitting there and having a drink. Unconsciously she tugged on Kieran’s sleeve. "Kieran, it’s-"
"I see him. I don’t believe my eyes."
Jeb seemed lost in his own little world so when she stopped mere inches from him it took a while for him to notice.
Startled Jeb looked up, but all he saw was a mysterious figure in a head to toe cloak. Clearing his throat he tried to peer past the shadows. "May I help you."
Dg barely paid his question heed. She extended her hand and placed it lightly on Jeb’s stunned face. "Jeb?"
His eyes swerved from they mysterious woman to the man who stood behind her who was constantly scanning all around them presumably for any hint of danger. He turned his attention back to the curious woman. "Yes?"
Dg removed her hand instantly when she realized what she was doing. "It’s me. Dg."
Jeb stood up so fast his chair went toppling. "Dg?" Gathering her into his arms he swung her around in a wide circle. "I can’t believe it’s you!"
For the first time in a long time she laughed. "It’s so good to see you Jeb. I can’t tell you how good."
Jeb carefully set her down but kept her in the circle of his arms. "What brings you to this hell hole?"
Dg shifted her askew cloak slightly so her face was still hidden. "I cam looking for you, Raw, and your father. Where are they?"
The smile slid from the younger Cain’s face. "Raw I can take you to. My father..." Jeb swallowed thickly.
Dg grabbed Jeb’s arms for support. "Jeb, where is he? Where the hell is Cain?" She asked frantically.
"I don’t know Dg. I don’t know! When she sent Raw and I here she ordered my fathers execution." Jeb blinked back tears. "Dg, I’m not even sure my father is even alive."
