Dg had never been one for crying, and the for the last three years she hadn’t even contemplated shedding tears, but now she couldn’t seem to stop. Jeb was her strong tower of strength and comfort as he rocked her back and forth soothingly. "He can’t be dead. He can’t be dead. He can’t be dead. He can’t be dead." She chanted quietly through her veil of tears.
Kieran was going berserk at the sight of his queen’s obvious sorrow, but recognizing his place he let Jeb deal with her. Raw had long ago left the small room he and Jeb shared murmuring that her agony was to strong for him.
"Dg, honey, my father isn’t weak. If I know anything I know he won’t give up without a fight. It’s possible he is still very much alive."
Suddenly as if a light switch had been flipped Dg stopped crying. Sitting up abruptly she nearly toppled to the floor, but kept herself from falling by clutching Jeb’s shoulders. She gazed at Jeb with frenzied excitement. "He isn’t dead. I know where he is at."
"Dg-"
"I’m not just saying that Jeb just to make you and I feel better, and I’m not crazy so don’t give me that look. It’s not vain hope either. You need to understand Lavender. It didn’t make sense then, but it does now. About a week after you all disappeared I heard her speaking to her advisors. She made a passing comment that he was back where he belonged. Jeb, Cain is back in the iron maiden."
Jeb went pale and his grip tightened on her almost painfully. "Do you know what you’re saying?"
"She told you that he was to be executed because that is exactly what she meant. Cain barely made it out intact the first time. This time-" Dg brushed away fresh tears impatiently. "This way she was sure he would be out of the way, and under no circumstances would you attempt to rescue him because you believed him dead. Cain is back in that damn tin suit, and so help me I’m not leaving him in there one more day."
*~*~*
Dg chewed her bottom lip with anxiety as she contemplated what she was going to do. Cain had barely survived the last time, so what was going to hold the man together this time? How was she going to save her Tin Man? Sure she would release him, but would that be enough to bring him back? Had she lost Cain forever because of Lavender? If she had there was no way that woman was going to live.
Along the way to his old home Jeb watched Dg slip back into her icy state. The only thing that evoked emotion into her eyes was around the subject of his father and even then the spark was dim. Someone had seriously shattered the old Dg leaving her cold and empty. The Dg he had briefly gotten to know and respect was no longer.
To Jeb’s everlasting astonishment they arrived just as the suns dipped low in the sky. Before they had even come to a complete stop Dg was off of her mount and running to the closed Tin Suit. Her hand shaking she reached forward and knocked just like she had all those years ago. Barely breathing she pressed her ear against the suit and listened.
Then came the knock back.
"Hold on Cain. I’m here." Kieran was already working on the bolts as fast as he possibly could. When Dg began to think she couldn’t wait a minute longer Kieran pried the door open. This time Dg caught Cain as he tumbled from his prison. Falling to the ground because of his weight she held him tightly to herself. He lay in her arms shallowly breathing. Tenderly DG brushed a finger down his gray cast face. "Oh, Cain."
As if on cue Cain’s eyes fluttered open. "Dg?"
Tears crashed down her cheeks and splashed on his face. "I’m here Wyatt. I’m right here."
"She put me in there again." His voice was pain filled and cracked.
"I’m so sorry. So very sorry. If I would have known-" Tears choked off her words and anything she attempted to say came out as mush. Giving up she buried her face in his neck and breathed in the beloved smell of her Tin Man.
Unable to move because of the angle he was laying and the way she was holding him he asked the question burning in his mind. "Jeb?"
To his vast relief Jeb appeared in his limited view. "I’m right here."
"How long-"
"Three years."
Cain took in a shuddering breath. "Dg, sweetheart?
Dg tightened her grip. "Don’t make me let go."
Cain laid for a second and just reveled in the fresh air. The first time in the iron maiden had been hell, the second...there where no words to describe it. "Don’t particularly want you to." He finally murmured in her ear.
*~*~*
They all decided to stay and camp at Cain’s rundown old home for the night. Dg had yet to let go of Cain, but she did remain strangely silent. The only time Dg and Cain had been parted was when Cain demanded to be able to bathe and shave. Even at that it had taken Jeb, Kieran, Garret, and Raw to pull away Dg. At the sight of her distress Cain had cleaned himself as fast as he could and then hastily returned to camp promptly bringing Dg back into the shelter of his arms.
Nuzzling her hair he smiled to himself. She still smelled the same. Exotic and way too tempting.
"Dg, why did you decided to come for me know? Won’t the queen just send me back?"
Dg pulled back slightly from him. "I had no idea that you were in that damn tin suit again Cain. I thought she had just sent you to some remote place. Lavender is no longer in power, I am." Her words broke herself from her trance that she had been captivated in. This was the man whose life she had ruined. What the hell did she think she was doing? Dg abruptly released Cain from her iron clad grip and stumbled away. Her eyes were wide with horror and before Cain could even mange thinking about stopping her she fled.
Cain wasn’t quite sure what he felt yet but he sure as hell knew he didn’t want to be parted from Dg. "Jeb please help me up." Staggering to his feet he followed the footsteps of his princess until he found her by the river bank her face dried of all tears. "Dg? Honey?"
Dg didn’t turn at the sound of his voice. "It was all my fault Cain."
"No it wasn’t."
Dg finally turned to look at him and Cain drew in a sharp breath at what he saw, and he thought he was in bad shape. "I can tell myself that, Az can tell me that, and even you can try telling me that, but it’s no use. If I hadn’t run away she would have tolerated you, but I made her angry and she took it out on you. She put you back in there Cain because she knew that is where you would suffer the most. It was to teach me a lesson."
Cain took a step forward but it only made her hastily step back sending her into the water. Cain made himself stop but it took every fiber inside of him not to rush forward and gather her into his arms. "Don’t blame yourself for her actions. I managed to piss her off all by myself."
"Stop it Cain. Just stop it. "
Cain couldn’t stop himself from stepping forward this time but Dg stumbled back another few steps, and now she was almost knee high in water. Frustrated he made his body stand still. "Don’t you dare blame yourself, do you hear me?"
"Cain I’ve killed you." She whispered brokenly.
Cain’s heart felt like it was shattering. Not caring a shit if she didn’t want him near he stalked forward. "Dg, stop moving away from me dammit!"
"Please don’t come near me Cain, and don’t touch me. I don’t think I can handle it."
Cain’s hands were clenched into fists and he was already wet to his calves. If he wanted he could probably lean forward and sweep his trembling princess into his arms. "You revived me the last time Dg. You taught me I still had heart. I remembered that this time around. I knew if you could the minute you knew where I was you would come. Just like you did. The only things that kept me alive these last three annuals was you Dg. When you come to grips with the fact it wasn’t you who did this to me I’ll be right here waiting. As it is I would like to take over my duties of protecting you."
Dg shook her head no. "The mystic man is dead Cain. You don’t have to stick around any more. You need to get away from me, take Jeb and go."
Cain didn’t even want to ask how she found out about his promise to the mystic man. He wasn’t about to lose Dg either. He had been a fool three annuals ago, and he wasn’t about to waste time now. "I love you Dg and I’m not going anywhere."
