Cain woke up slowly, holding onto the last of his dreams. He quickly came to the realization that not only was Dg still in his arms, but that they were sprawled all over the couch. And Jeb Cain was staring down at him trying not to laugh. Cursing under his breath, Cain sat up and rubbed his eyes, resting Dg against the back of the couch.
Dg.
She barely made a sound; all she did was curl up and murmur incoherently.
"Hello, Dad." Jeb greeted slyly, eyes bright with amusement. Azkadellia stood behind him, looking around the house with awe as two guards took their posts at the door. The men didn’t look in Cain’s direction, which was probably for the best.
"Jeb." Cain groaned, rubbing at his eyes.
What the hell had he gotten himself into?
Yeah, now we get to go through all this trouble, and we didn’t even get anything last night. Because of you! Thank you Wyatt Cain, now we get to fight the rumors, and assumptions. Couldn’t you have given in graciously just once?
"Looks like you had a very... productive night." Jeb chose his words carefully.
"It’s not what it looks like." Cain mumbled. Jeb grinned like a fool.
Thanks to you, Wyatt Cain. Dg was willing.
"If it was what it looked like, father… you wouldn’t be dressed." He hitched a thumb in the sleeping Dg’s direction. "And neither would she."
Cain shot a brief, envious glance towards Dg.
Lucky girl, she gets to sleep through all this.
"I would prefer not to talk about it."
"Whatever you say, Pops. I looked around while you were dead to the world and it looks like there are enough rooms for the girls to have their own, you and I to share, and Leo and Phil to share. Worked out well actually. So, what’s been going on while we were still in the Oz?" Jeb sat on the chair across from Cain.
"Too much. Let me get her upstairs and then I’ll fill you in." Cain stood, gathered the still sleeping Dg in his arms, and trudged upstairs. Placing her carefully on the bed, he pulled the blanket up to cover her.
"Mmmm… Cain?" She mumbled sleepily. Her eyes were hovering open slightly, but only the tiniest bit. Cain bent down and tucked a piece of her hair behind her ear, smiling.
"Yes?"
Look at her Cain… she’s sleepy, warm, and adorable. All you have to do is climb in and pull her into your arms, and then all our dreams will come true! Come on Cain, please?
"Where are you going?" She questioned still mostly asleep. She curled the blankets around her and snuggled deeper into the warmth of her bed. Cain half laughed and half groaned.
"Back downstairs. I have to catch Jeb up with everything and make a few plans."
“Jeb’s here?” Dg yawned.
“Yup. Az too.”
"Az...” Dg sighed, smiling happily. “Wake me up in about an hour, ‘kay?"
Cain smiled gently down her. "Yes ma’am."
*~*~*
"Dg… wake up kiddo." Cain urged, shaking her shoulder softly.
"Leave me alone Cain… and don’t call me that. I’m not a kid." Dg grumbled sleepily. Cain raised an eyebrow.
"Mm-hm. You still need to get up."
"I don’t want to. Go away." Dg muttered under her breath.
"Get up now or I’ll drag you out of bed."
Hmmm, this could be a good thing. Once we ‘drag’ her out of bed what shall we do with her next?
Dg rolled and would have landed on the floor, if it hadn’t been for Cain’s swift actions. He held her waist as she found feeling return to her legs.
"I’m already regretting getting my job back-" Dg hastily put her hand over Cain’s mouth. "And don’t you dare say I told you so."
Hey Cain, if you opened your mouth you could nip her hand. I’m sure, no I’m positive… She’d be okay with that. And you would too… Come on Cainy-poo; just open your damned mouth!
Cain waited until Dg removed her hand and the temptation had passed.
"I would never dream of saying ‘I-told-you-so’. I’m to nice."
Dg laughed. "Sure you are." Moving away from him, she headed towards the shower. "By the way, Cain, you’re not coming with me to work today."
"I damn well am." He folded his arms. Dg turned to glare at him.
"The hell you are. The last time I let you come, you got into a fight. You can’t come."
"If I can’t come then you’re not going, and that’s the end of this discussion." Cain managed to ground out, his face red with anger.
"Damn it all! You can’t come!"
Cain stalked forward and grasped her forearms. Unfortunately that only made him more aware of what she was and was not wearing. She was entirely too soft.
Hmmm, come on Cain. She looks like a goddess when she’s angry. She’s hardly wearing anything to boot. Swipe off the shirt, yank off the pants, and voila we’ll be in business!
"I’m coming Dg." His eyes glinted with a pinch of wrath and a large heap of lust. "I. Am. Coming."
Dg’s eyes slid shut and with a soft exhale of air she relented.
"Please, please don’t make me regret bringing you."
*~*~*
Cain watched Dg as she rushed to and fro. Her hair was coming undone, her face was glistening with sweat, and she looked exhausted. But she was still the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. His head cocked slightly he watched her take an elderly lady’s order. Dg was the epitome of perfection.
"Carter, I’m taking five!" Dg called, wiping her forehead with the back of her hand. Carter looked up briefly.
"Go ahead and take ten. It’s slow as molasses in here and you’ve earned it."
"Thanks, you’re my new hero." Dg called back, mockingly. Heading to the booth Cain had claimed earlier that morning, she flopped down on the seat opposite him. Propping her feet up on his side of the booth, she melted into her seat. "You’ve got to be extremely bored Cain, why don’t you go home?"
"No." Cain’s eyes narrowed.
"Well, at least you haven’t started fights." Dg sighed.
Cain’s delectable lips tipped into one of his famous half smiles. He pulled his fedora up slightly so he could look at her better. Dg shook her head as her heart leapt, smiling.
"You’re impossible."
"And you’re unbelievably stubborn. So where does that leave us?" Cain chuckled.
"Absolutely nowhere." Dg huffed.
Cain’s hand lightly curled around her ankle.
Come on Cain, how freakin' long are you going to hold out? This woman is a mouth-watering treat! Let’s partake! Come on, come on, come on! Just one little taste, please? Pretty, pretty please?
Dg watched him in a daze as his thumb lightly stroked the joint of her ankle. This wasn’t typical Cain action. Was his cold front melting, even a little bit?
"Dg! Time’s up!" Carter yelled from the kitchen. Dg nearly jumped out of her skin at his terse command. Pulling her ankle from Cain’s grasp, she stood.
"Gotta go. Keep being a good boy, will ya?"
Let’s be a really good boy, snatch her, and have our wicked way with her! Cain cleared his throat.
"I won’t get into a fight, Dg. Get back to work."
Or, we could do a different kind of work…
Cain groaned. The voices were back full throttle.
*~*~*
Dg sat next to Az on the porch watching the stars twinkling in the night sky. Cain was napping in Hank’s giant armchair. Jeb was sprawled out on the grass near their feet. And the two guards we’re taking a much-needed rest.
"It’s strange here… but very beautiful." Az commented, absent-mindedly.
"I guess… No where’s as beautiful as the Oz."
Az shrugged her slim shoulders daintily. "Perhaps not, but we could be stuck in worse places."
"Maybe."
"At least Mr. Cain is here." Az grinned slyly, her face alive with mischief.
"I suppose." Dg consented blankly, hoping this conversation wasn’t going where she thought it was.
"You two seem to get along very well." Az snickered. Dg blushed and turned her face so she didn’t have to meet her sister’s gleeful stare.
"I don’t know what you mean. Cain and I are good friends." Dg sighed unintentionally. Jeb plopped down beside her and threw an arm around her shoulders. Dg hadn’t even noticed him getting up.
"Just admit it Dg, you like my father. If I can come to terms with it, so can you."
Dg’s face paled. Was she so blatantly obvious? Was her attraction to Cain so apparent?
"Jeb… I...well...I-I-"
"Dg, I look forward to the day my father finally gives in." Jeb grinned and patted her cheek lovingly. "Between you and me, he hasn’t got a chance."
Dg gaped at him her eyes wide. "Why are you so okay with this? Most guys would flip out that a girl their age is into their dad!" When it finally occurred to her what she just said, she clapped a hand over her mouth. Jeb smiled at her tenderly.
"Because you make him smile, Deej…" His face contorted in pain for a brief second before smoothing out again. "A feat my mother never even tried to accomplish."
"See Dg, now you have no excuse." Az interjected with a smile.
Dg sat back for a moment before hugging them both. She stumbled to her feet and rushed into the house. Time for the next phase. It was simple, really: Catch Cain alone and kiss him senseless. That’s right, let the blasted man see what he is missing!
Hesitating for a brief second, she decided she would take a walk outside first. Cain wasn’t going anywhere. She slipped out her window and followed a familiar path. Before leaving
In no time at all, she was soaked to the bone; her t-shirt plastered to her body. She probably should have put a coat on, but she hadn’t really expected it to start raining. She kept walking.
The peace of the night was a pleasant change from her tumultuous life. It was really starting to get cold and a slight breeze was picking up, but still she walked on. She was not going to waste this night by returning inside. Not when all that was waiting for her was a lecture.
Wrapping her arms around herself she walked further and further. She wasn’t even sure she was still on her property. Who really cared? The night was magnificent. Glancing around she spotted an outcropping of trees. Perfect.
She decided Cain would forgive her, eventually, because tonight she was sleeping under the stars.
Even though she would probably catch pneumonia.
*~*~*
"Jeb, Princess Azkadellia, have you seen Dg?" Cain asked, stepping out onto the porch.
Jeb glanced up. "Last time I saw her she was headed inside to find you."
"Damnit. I just finished searching inside, I can’t find her." Cain closed the screen door behind him. Jeb sprang to his feet.
"What do you mean, ‘you can’t find her’?"
"What I mean is… she’s disappeared." Cain’s body tensed. Az stood nervously.
"Where do you think she could be?"
"I don’t know, but when I find her she’s in a heap of trouble." Cain’s fists tightened. Azkadellia cringed.
"Do you think-"
"The Queen assured me that it was impossible for anyone to slip through onto this side." Cain interrupted.
"But are you sure-"
Cain ignored Az and turned to his son.
"Wake up Leo and Phil. We need to find her before she gets into too much trouble. Leave Phil with Azkadellia; send Leo to the South, and you search to the east. I’ll head North."
Jeb nodded and hurried inside. He had a very bad feeling that his father was going to kill Dg.
*~*~*
"DG!!" Cain had been calling her name for hours, but he had yet to hear a reply. The woman was going to be the death of him. Perhaps Azkadellia had been right, what if someone had managed to slip through? What if they had taken Dg? What if she was injured, or worse? Ozma above, what if she was already dead? That thought only encouraged him further. "DG!!! DG where are you!!" He peered around him desperately, but the rain had started to pour. If he didn’t find her soon… "DG!!!"
Seeing an outcropping of trees, inspiration struck. What if she had just come out here for peace? Sprinting forward he skidded to a halt when his assumptions were answered. Dg was curled into a tight ball staring at the sky with awe.
"DG!" Kneeling beside her he brought her into his arms. "What the hell do you think you are doing?"
Dg coughed and it wracked through her body unmercifully. "I wanted to-" She was broken off by another fit of coughing. "Spend the night under the stars."
"Damn you Dg!" Cain roared. "Do you realize what you’ve done?" Gathering her into his arms he rose to his feet. "Now you’re going to be sick."
Dg shivered uncontrollably against him. "It was worth it. The stars have never shined so brightly." She went into another coughing convulsion. Cain winced for her.
"Princess, why the hell did you sneak out?"
Dg looked up at him for a brief second, but she turned her face into his chest when the rain beat at her face.
"I just wanted to be alone." She admitted. "And the night was so very peaceful."
Cain shuddered when she once again set forth in an explosion of coughing. "You could have been hurt, or worse. Do you know what that would have done to your family? To me?"
"I’m sorry..." Dg whimpered against him as she curled up closer to him. She felt frozen from inside out. Maybe this hadn’t been such a brilliant idea. Cain sighed heavily.
"Just...just don’t do it again. I can’t lose you." He admitted the sounds wrenched from his gut. Little did she now how much she truly meant to him. Dg was everything. Without her this life wasn’t worth living.
At any other time his words would have sent her over the moon. Right now she was tired, frozen, and couldn’t seem to stop coughing.
"I promise I won’t sneak out again."
"Let’s get you inside Deej… and try to warm you up."
Dg wiggled closer to his warmth.
"Mm, okay." Haziness started to envelope her. Cain’s face was wavering in and out of her view.
"Dg? Dg?" Cain shook her. "DG!! Stay with me…”
*~*~*
Dg woke up in unbearable warmth. Shoving against the source of the heat she fought the hands that tried to help her.
"No....no...."
"Dg, sweetheart, stay still." A soothing voice murmured and drifted through her consciousness. The scalding heat on her skin was hurting more than helping.
"Stop it...no, no..... STOP IT!" Dg screamed writhing against the heat.
"Keep her down!" Someone ordered above her. "We have to get her warm."
Dg struck out hitting whatever she came in contact with. Words ran out of her mouth but came out as nothing more than mush.
Someone’s arms wrapped around her.
"Dg, it’s okay. You’re safe. You need to calm down so we can get you warm."
Sensing that it was Cain holding her she liquefied into his embrace. The once scalding heat was now only a prick of annoyance, and the feel and smell of Cain all around her was pleasure in it’s self.
Clinging to the sense of him she fell into a restful sleep.
*~*~*
Dg came to slowly and with great reluctance. A pleasant warmth seeped into her senses and lulled her into a state of intimate comfort. Cain’s unique scent drifted back into her senses and invaded her sleep. Her eyes slowly drifted open to meet with a pair of ice blue eyes.
"Cain." she breathed against his neck.
Cain shifted and as he moved, brought her with him. As her lingering smokiness evaporated, she realized she was swathed like a mummy in blankets, and not only that but she was bundled with Cain. She was welded against his bare chest and he was holding her tightly. He was what was so unbearably warm last night. They seemed to be lying in her bed, but this wasn’t exactly how she imagined getting him there.
"Good morning ki- princess." His lips ghosted against the tender skin of her neck.
Cain, do you realize where we could go from here? Your already half undressed, she’s warm and scantily clothed. Do you see a problem here? Dg shifted sending shooting awareness in his loins. Dear god, Cain, this is perfect!
"What happened last night?" She questioned drowsily her fingers idly playing with his chest hairs. Cain groaned quietly.
"You floated in and out of consciousness, had an extreme fever, wouldn’t let anything warm touch you, and started mumbling incoherently. You finally calmed down after awhile in my arms, and then drifted to sleep. Now, here we are."
Exactly Cain. Here she is, here you are, let’s get it on!
Dg sighed and decided now was a good time as any. Turning in his embrace, she reached up and kissed him. As soon as his lips slid against hers she moaned loudly, unable to stop herself. Cain’s tongue glided across her lips sensuously. Opening her mouth she deepened their kiss. When his tongue slipped between her lips another loud moan escaped her lips.
"Dg, do you think you could turn the sound down? You’re making me remember why this is a bad idea."
Dg grimaced. She wasn’t sure she could promise that she would turn the sound down, not with Cain touching her. It turned out she didn’t even have to try; Cain unwrapped her from around him and slipped from the bed.
You idiot.
