In Kansas, it was Christmas Eve, and DG found herself missing the other side more than ever. Her mother had done her best to spread some winter cheer around the palace, but it had only brought DG to tears whenever the royal decorators eagerly asked for her assistance in finding a proper Christmas tree after they had mistakenly brought her six barren trees instead of evergreens. Fin Aqua showed no signs of any weather other than breezy spring days that monotonously confused DG, as she finally learned from Glitch that Fin Aqua was the “magical paradise” of the OZ.
DG sighed and let her head fall to her desk as the head royal decorator turned to ask her what popcorn was. All at once, she found herself both crying and laughing at the same time, which turned into long sobs of despair while tears poured down her pale cheeks. The decorator took this as his cue to leave, and scuttled out quickly, clamping the doors shut behind him. DG merely cried harder, her whimpers of discontent bouncing of the spacious walls of her expansive room.
Slowly, her anger grew, and she began to throw everything within her reach at the far wall where her sketches of home lay, looking peaceful and content against the palace’s cold walls. Soon, her dresser drawers were empty, the bed practically torn in two and she shrank into herself, moaning piteously as she stared at the mess. The tears were cold and stained her cheeks, making her shiver as her lip trembled in a defiant pout. Papers fluttered beside her, and she snatched them from their surroundings and began to crumple them up, tearing and throwing them until she was left with only shreds that surrounded her like flakes of snow.
She choked back a sob as her decorator once again entered her room and she lunged towards him, screaming uncontrollably while her mouth uttered nonsense. But only once she finally had the mindless little twit who had ruined her day and perhaps her whole life, did she find strong arms wrenching her off of the poor creature. Her mind raced as she fought to escape her new attacker and she began cursing as loudly as possible. She lashed out recklessly and turned to see Cain, and in a flash, he had her tight within his grasp, and she soon found herself powerless. She huffed in anger as she struggled, only to find him squeeze her tightly. Her mind raced for a solution and instinct kicked in as she began to squirm against him.
She managed to wiggle her arm free and struck him hard against the cheek. Alarmed, he released her, and she now lie sprawled across the floor, her arms crossed, her face set like stone. Cain merely stared down at her, his face filled with hurt and confusion as she stared up at him and tried to breathe and calm her rapid, mad mind.
“DG…” Cain whispered, and she melted into despair. Her eyes flooded with tears, her lip trembling, she stared up at her only protector who now looked at her with a sort of sweet compassion.
“Come ‘ere. Let’s calm down now.” He whispered as he sat beside her. She whimpered in response and buried her face into his collar bone.
The room had now grown dark, and several people approached the door, checking in to see the damage. A few munchkins invaded the small room and prepared to clean it, but Cain waved them away with his pistol as he cradled DG close to his heart.
“Now, what the hell happened before I ran in here?” Cain asked as he looked around him at the damaged room. DG sniffled quietly.
“Well?” Cain nudged her, and she sat up to look at the damage. Her shoulders slumped and she heaved a giant sigh.
“I-I lost it…I can’t be a princess Cain.” She looked towards him with weary eyes, but soon turned them to the floor.
“Bullshit. Seriously now, what the hell made you trash your entire room and nearly kill a palace official?” Cain was merciless. DG sat silently for a little while, picking at her nails.
“I miss home…Nothing is ever quite as good as home; and that idiot,” she snarled thrusting a finger at the unconscious munchkin, “is driving me MAD! He’s only done every single thing wrong that there is, and I don’t know how he does it…but he just, he ruined………everything.” She whispered the last word as a small tinkling could be heard from above.
Cain had tackled her in an instant, using his body as a shield as the chandelier fell and burst into millions of tiny glass fragments that spread across the room faster than wildfire. A crunch of footsteps could be heard as screams echoed through the hallway and gunshots pierced the air, drawing silence from the disruptors. Cain lifted his head a fraction to see:
Zero.
His face turned into a nasty grin as he stared down at the two crumpled on the floor.
“Well well, nice to see you Wyatt, how are things at home? Your beloved wife still screaming in your ears Tin Man?! Ah well, the ever present hero has saved the day yet again, but this time, I call the shots. Since you won’t let the snotty little princess die, I guess I’ll just take you both prisoner until I find use for you…If I choose to let you live, that is.” He snarled as two of his men grabbed Cain and DG, immediately disarming both of them.
“Nice piece you got there princess, Cain advise you to keep this? I bet he even taught you how to fire…What nice little lovebirds you make.” He leered and DG spat in his face. “Temper temper little child, or we might just meet our end today. Let’s go.” He snapped, and they were hauled put of the castle and into the cargo hold of a small ship.
Few words were uttered as they were transported to a small dungeon buried far beneath both earth and sea at the edge of the large lake that nearly encompassed all of Fin Aqua. As they were released from their shackles, Zero gave the order for them to be locked in the same small room.
“Night lovebirds.” He sneered and gave a wink before slamming the door behind him.
