Dg sat up abruptly, causing the empty wine bottle to roll off the bed and hit the floor with a definite thud. Groaning, she rubbed her eyes and peered around the room. She felt something warm move beside her.  After glancing beside her, she let out a soft yelp. With a sigh of relief, she recognized what the warm thing was.

Cain.

A small smile drifted to her lips as she watched him sleep. His chest rose and fell gently as his face rested in perfect peace. Dg was pretty positive she liked waking up with him next to her like this. (Even if he had only stayed because she threatened to jump off the roof in her inebriated state.)

Who cares how he had ended up staying here, at least he was here. That was all that really mattered. Leaning over slightly she brushed a finger across Cain’s eyebrow. Cain moaned softly and inched closer to her unconsciously. Her heart began to burn with unfamiliar feelings that she liked and hated all at the same time. Smiling, her hand drifted down to cup his cheek.

“Wake up, sleeping beauty.”

With a mutter of protest one of Cain’s eyes popped open.

“Mm, make me.” He responded before closing his one eye again.

“Cain.”  Dg whined pathetically her lips turning into a pout.

“Let me sleep princess.” He groaned and flipped over burying his head under her pillow.

“But Cain, aren’t we leaving soon?” Dg reminded her voice sugar coated.

Cain mumbled and grumbled several obscenities before he unburied his head and blinked owlishly up at her.

“This is your fault.”

Dg ordered herself not to smile, biting down hard on her lip she pushed back the need to laugh. “And how is that?”

“If you weren’t so plastered last night I wouldn’t have needed to wonder if you really would jump off the roof, or do something equally as stupid. I spent all night worrying about what you could possibly do to yourself if I closed my eyes. I didn’t fall asleep until early this morning.”

“And how is that my fault? I can’t be blamed for your tendency to over worry about things now can I?”

 Cain glared at her.

“You’re purposely driving me to an early grave.”

Dg cocked her head and stared at him blankly. With his jesting words, something had just snapped into place in her brain.

 Her parents were dead.

For all she knew so were her robo-parents.

Dg felt completely, and utterly alone.

Gasping, Dg sprung from the bed and sprinted towards the bathroom. Wiping at tears, she pushed into the bathroom and kneeled over the toilet, losing her stomach. Gasping for air in-between being sick was not something she would advise trying, especially since she couldn’t stop crying.

Strong arms wrapped around her and held her tight.

“Cain.” She gasped, sobbing.

“Shh, shh honey.” He soothed gently as he rocked her back and forth. “I’m right here.”

“If anything happens to you...or Az…or Jeb…I’ll be alone!” She wailed. “I can’t-I cant… breathe…” She wheezed struggling in vain to catch her breath.

Cain’s face paled as her held. “Dg, sweetheart, just take it easy. Stop panicking. I’m right here, Dg! Dg, I’m right here!”

Dg coughed and sputtered as tears rained from her eyes. “Cain-”

“Sweetheart, please.” He begged softly fear clawing at him.

“Dead. Their dead.” She wheezed her lungs contracting so tight she feared she would die from lack of oxygen.

She rested a cold, small, and soft hand across her eyes as if trying to block out the images that DG was conjuring of her parents. Pictures of them dead and lifeless.  She didn’t hear her sister come in.

“I’m right here Deej.” Azkadellia, whispered softly. “I’m right here.”

Cain’s arms loosened and fell away from Dg as he let Azkadellia take his spot. However, before Cain could relinquish his position, Dg grabbed his shirt in an iron grip.

“Don’t leave me.” She whimpered.

Cain and Az both ended up holding Dg as she sobbed. The touch of her sister seemed to lessen the shocking fear that had overcome her.

“I won’t let them touch you, Az. I won’t let them touch you.” Dg muttered over and over, face tense with determination.

“Shh, honey. No one is going to hurt me, or you for that matter. We have the Cain men, remember?” Azkadellia soothed softly.

When at least Dg went lax and quiet, Cain nodded to Az, signaling that he would take it from here. Az granted him a tired smile and departed.

“Come on princess, let’s get you a shower and ready to go.”

*~*~*

When the solemn group arrived in the Oz, Matthews and a couple of men Dg didn’t recognize were waiting for them. As if Matthews had known her his whole life, He took Dg into his arms and held her tightly without words.

Dg could only surmise that he read people exceedingly well.

Or she was really easy to read.

Since the Cain men had decided that Finaqua would be the best place to stay for safety reasons, they had the travel storm land them close to Finaqua’s borderers. Once they arrived, Dg immediately set off for the swing that she remembered her mother used to rock her in.  The fact that she could remember it was a miracle in itself.

Sitting down cautiously, she started the swing going using her foot. Back and forth she went.

Back and forth.

Back and forth.

She continued in this pattern until the soft whoosh of air she created wiped out the sadness that clutched her heart and dried the tears on her cheeks.

Back and forth.

Back and forth.

With a soft sigh, Dg didn’t lift her eyes from Finaqua’s silky smooth surface as she heard (or felt, really) Cain come up behind her.

“You can’t stay out here forever, kiddo.” He mentioned softly.  Dg bit down hard on her lip to keep from lashing out, but the words came hurtling out anyways.

“Don’t call me kiddo. We had sex, remember? I don’t think you would have sex with a kid, would you Cain?”  She bit each word as if it were tart.  Cain came around and knelt down in front of her.

“I’m sorry Dg, it slipped.  I don’t think of you as a kid… I could never forget what we shared.”

A film of tears coated Dg’s eyes. “I’m sorry Cain… I didn’t mean to snap.”

“You don’t have to apologize.  It’s freezing out here, let’s get you inside.” Taking her hand gently, he helped her to her feet. Dg followed him in without a protest; she was too tired to care.

“Cain, did you know that Ahamo… I mean… my father… he said I was just like my mother?”

Cain gave her a tender smile. “I can see that. I heard she had an adventurous spirit just like you. Never really knew her myself, but I bet Glitch can tell you all about her escapades.”

“So I come by it honestly?”

“Yeah, it’s in your genes.”

Leading her to her old room that he had staked out earlier he helped her undress and get into bed.

“Stay here.” Dg pleaded, eyes wide with desire for warm comforting arms.

Cain relented and toed off his boots, throwing his hat and duster on a nearby chair. Crawling into the bed, her brought her into his arms. “Sweet dreams, Princess.”

*~*~*

Before the first rays of dawn peaked through the wispy curtains, Dg was sitting up in bed, resting her back against the headboard. Eyes narrowed to slits, she bore a dangerous stare at the wall with sorrow. She needed to remember her birth parents somehow… not to mention her robo parents. They needed some sort of memorial.

Something that she could look at and remember her heritage.

A picture.

Rising with determination, she strode over to the wall and stood in front of it, scowling, with her hands on her hips.

It was large, blank, and glaring white.

She was going to have to use magic, to feel it, and she was sure she could. As Cain watched from behind, he noticed she took on a golden tint as she raised both hands and squeezed her eyes shut tightly.

Dg breathed in and out evenly as she concentrated on the faces of her beloved deceased family. She was going to give them this… or she was going to die trying.

She stood that way for about an hour working from memory and her eyes closed to better concentrate on the details of their beloved faces. Then all the sudden she knew she her masterpiece was complete. Stumbling back, she was caught by Cain who wrapped his arms around her.

“It’s beautiful, Sweetheart.” He breathed softly in her ear.

Dg opened her eyes slowly. What met them was a breathtaking sight she couldn’t believe came from her. It was a brilliant blend of colors that pieced together a mural… It perfectly presented the faces of her robo parents, her biological parents, her beloved sister, Cain and Jeb, and even Glitch and Raw. The main focus was the faces. Then around the focal point were scenes off her journey in the Oz, and what little she could remember of her childhood. Stepping forward, she placed light fingertips on the faces of her parents.

“Pictures of you and I,” She murmured with a smile that shined through her cascade of tears.
