“Where are we?” DG asked, as she looked around the rather large room.
“Beneath Fin Aqua; these are temporary rooms used to hide nobles if the castle is invaded or threatened. There are ways we can escape, but Zero may have blocked them off.” Cain replied. “Most of the escape routes can only be shown through magic…”
DG hummed, remembering a simple scrying spell her mother had taught her earlier.
“Give me a minute.” DG murmured as she folded her hands together while touching her pointer fingers together and keeping them up. She scrunched her eyes closed, trying to picture the room within her mind’s eye. Cain shuffled in the background, and DG merely opened one eye to address him.
“You might want to sit on the bed or something, or you might get hurt.” She teased, and Cain shuffled into a corner with a smile.
The spell was simple enough, but it left a few burn marks on the floor that, for one reason or another, wouldn’t stop smoldering. DG giggled at Cain as he stared in disbelief at a star shaped burn beneath him.
“I think this is what we’re looking for.” He said as he pulled at the floorboard which revealed a hidden trap door. All right, bar the door with the chairs DG and then down we go.”
“But, why bar the doors?” DG questioned as she dragged a heavy armchair across the door. Cain looked up at her as he heaved the heavy steel door open.
“More time to escape.” He simply explained. DG heaved another chair that was slightly lighter than the first on top of the heavy one.
“Will that be enough?” She smiled as he nodded.
“Perfect. Now, grab my arm and I’ll lower you down.”
It was damp below the door, where tightly packed earth provided a tunnel that was strong and high enough to stand up in.
“I’m down Cain, there’s a tunnel down here, and you can just hop down.” She said loudly.
"Alright, give me a minute and I’ll cover our exit.” Cain responded. DG fumbled as she found a switch on the wall beside her and soon heaved into an upright position. She smiled, dusting her slightly bruised hands as light glimmered from behind small crystals, illuminating the tunnel in a dusky blue light.
“Nice work Deeg.” Cain said as he clapped a hand on her shoulder. “I moved some of the chairs to cause some commotion if they come after us. Now, I’m gonna give you a boost so you can close the door okay?” She nodded and he grabbed her knees, lifting her so she could sit on his shoulder.
“Got it!” She cried and pulled the door down fast as Cain flipped her into his arms. She stared at him for a moment as he smiled back.
“Alright princess, let’s get out of here.” He as he set her feet back on the ground.
They traveled in silence for awhile as the tunnel led straight to a waterfall that DG remembered crossing all to well.
“We can climb the side of the cliffs, but we shouldn’t head back to the castle just yet.” Cain said as he eyed the split passageways. “This one leads to Central City. We can stay at the Tin Man Headquarters and gain information on what Zero’s planning.” Cain explained as he turned towards the left passageway. DG nodded and followed him.
The passageway was narrow and darker than the first, the worn crystals shone a faint green, which was enough to see only the walls. DG gripped Cain’s arm tightly so she wouldn’t lose him and followed step by step until the passage opened out into a cave.
“There’s the zip line we took to get across the break earlier.” DG exclaimed, pointing up into the trees.
“Yep, let’s keep moving princess, they’ve probably realized we’re missing now.” Cain took her arm and moved her towards a nearby dirt road. “Tin Men use this as a patrol route. We’ll keep to the brush beside it to stay hidden though.” He warned as they began to head north.
“Wyatt look!” DG pointed upwards as Cain stopped in his tracks. Above them sat a small flying monkey, abandoned and tired.
“Zero can’t control them DG, we’ll be fine.” Cain stammered as he pulled her away from the miserable creature. “It may still want to attack you, that was it’s last order.”
“Alright, alright.” DG replied and waved goodbye to the poor monster before turning back to grip Cain’s arm once again.
“We’re out of the tunnel, you don’t have to keep hold of me.” Cain mumbled as they continued on.
“It’s comforting.” DG murmured in reply and Cain turned to look at her for a moment before continuing on.
A single shot interrupted them as several men erupted from the brush.
“Don’t move! I’ve got eight Tin Men trained on you from both the air and below. This is a restricted area, you’ll need coding to get through.” A voice echoed through the air.
“It’s Wyatt Cain, just passing through with princess DG. We need to get to Tin Man headquarters immediately, Zero has breeched through the castle forces.” Cain stated as clearly as possible. A rustle rippled through the area around them as men appeared, their rifles disarmed and pointed to the ground. An older man approached them,
“I’ll take ya, but we gotta leave now.” He said, and they were escorted to a small jeep.
“Thanks Jerry,” Cain said as he helped DG into the tall vehicle.
“No prob Wyatt. Knowing you, we’re in a rush ‘eh?” Jerry asked as he flung his hat into the backseat and stared the jeep.
“I’m always in a rush.” Cain replied as they sped towards Central City.
