Cain could only watch as Zero ordered two Longcoats to manhandle DG into the iron suit. They were back in front of his cabin – Cain still couldn’t figure out how they’d gotten there so quickly. DG was fighting back, swinging her legs wildly, and screaming at her sister, who was standing between Cain and Zero. One of her heavy boots made contact with the guard’s kneecap, causing Cain to smile.
The taller guard – the one she didn’t kick – shoved DG into the cage with such force that her head smacked against the back; the sound of it made Cain sick. Dazed, DG didn’t fight back as the injured guard made sure that all her extremities were within the confines of the suit before slamming the cover shut.
That seemed to be enough to bring DG back, because she began pounding on the door, screaming for Cain. At the same moment, as if the guards holding him back were expecting a reaction, their grip tightened.
Fighting as hard as he could, Cain might as well have been pushing against a brick wall. It was as if all his strength had disappeared. For the briefest moment, he wondered if this was what his wife, Adora, saw when he was being shoved into the same suit. It was the same suit, his brain realized. Zero and Azkadellia turned to face him, both with a successful smirk slapped across their faces.
“I will kill you, Zero,” Cain said, trying to pour every ounce of anger into his voice. He could still hear DG’s bangs, though her voice was beginning to falter. Cain looked at the faceplate and could see her outline, eyes wide. Zero nodded and stepped closer. In a low tone, he responded,
“You couldn’t even protect a girl.” Zero shook his head in disappointment and glanced to Azkadellia, who nodded. Glancing back to the suit for a moment, Zero smiled and returned to face Cain. “Guess you’ll have a long time to think about that.” Cain’s head tilted, ever-so-slightly; he didn’t understand.
A moment later, Zero’s words became perfectly clear.
The two men who put DG into her iron suit joined the two holding him back. Together, the four men pushed Cain backwards into an iron suit of his own. Cain fought back with all his might, his eyes on DG – whose eyes had gone even wider. Was that what she was yelling about? She’d seen the suit behind him and was trying to warn him – not worrying about how she’d get out of the suit.
Always worrying about him. As the realization that Zero was right - he had failed DG – came to Cain, his body went limp. He didn’t deserve anything but the suit. The door slammed shut, the pins inserted, and Zero smirked through the faceplate. As he backed away, Cain saw a look of sheer enjoyment on Azkadellia’s face before she stepped away.
Closing his eyes, Cain took a deep breath and let his chin drop to his chest. ‘Forgive me, DG,’ he thought. Looking through the faceplate again, he could see her. She realized he was looking at her and placed a hand on the faceplate. Sighing, he did the same.
Cain jerked awake and blinked. Realizing he’d been dreaming, the man closed his eyes and sighed. Looking across the room, lit only by the gentle flame in the fireplace, Cain saw Raw and Glitch, both fast asleep. Raw was curled up on a blanket on one of the many long seats in the room; Glitch twisted into what looked like a most uncomfortable position, having chosen a smaller armchair. Assuming that he was dreaming, as his whole body twitched a few times, Cain raised one eyebrow, rose from his chair and turned to the door.
Moving into the hallway, Cain decided that since he was up – and surely not falling asleep again any time soon – he might as well make sure everyone else was sleeping peacefully. There was more light in the hallway from the torches, so Cain didn’t have to worry about tripping over any of the furniture.
He stopped at the door leading to DG’s room and noticed a dim light coming from the room a few doors down; the one Azkadellia had been assigned. Figuring DG was there with her sister, Cain decided to pop his head in, just to make sure the girls were all right.
As he reached the door, Cain could hear a soft singing. He recognized the lullaby as one Adora used to sing to Jeb as an infant. A smile slipped across his face and he stepped closer to the doorway. Tilting his head to peek through the door, Cain leaned forward and saw the Queen sitting on the bed, Azkadellia curled up by her side. Cain listened to the tune and flashed back to a memory of Adora, carrying Jeb around their home, trying to calm the boy.
His grin widened and, opening his eyes, realized the Queen was looking at him. He stiffened automatically as she tilted her head, just enough to let him know that he was not intruding. Azkadellia shifted with a slight moan, causing the Queen’s gaze to return to her oldest daughter. She continued the tune and looked back to the Tin Man, who gave her a courteous nod before backing away.
Cain decided it was time to give sleep another try, but stopped short as he passed DG’s door. He hadn’t seen her in Azkadellia’s room, therefore she must be in her own room still. Of course, it wasn’t his business to go barging into her room, especially just to see if she was sleeping soundly.
Honestly, he didn’t like that DG was in her own room. He couldn’t keep an eye on her if she was across a hallway, four rooms down. Even though the witch was gone, the royal family back in control... he just didn’t like it.
After a few more seconds of arguing with himself over whether to enter or not, Cain finally made a decision. “Aw hell,” he sighed, and put his hand on the doorknob. Opening the door just enough to stick his head in, Cain glanced around the room, looking for the bed. His brow furrowed and his body straightened. Charging into the room, breathing heavy, he wanted to be sure he wasn’t seeing things. He stopped two steps from the end of the bed and looked around the room.
DG wasn’t there.
Cain moved into the hallway and looked toward Azkadellia’s room. The last thing he wanted to do was get the girl riled up again, let alone the Queen. He quickly glanced down each end of the hallway, frowning, then blinked.
Glitch. Glitch could help him find the Princess. Assuming, of course, that Glitch could remember his way around the castle.
Cain barreled into the room he was sharing with his friends, his mind racing with a hundred different scenarios. Glancing from the chair he’d been sleeping in, to Raw and then Glitch, Cain opened his mouth to wake them up, and froze. Mouth still hanging open, Cain blinked once and looked back to his chair.
His expression changed immediately, as if he’d just been the subject of the O.Z.’s biggest joke. Had he looked a quarter of an inch to his left upon bolting awake, he would have seen DG; curled up under a blanket, on the long couch just beside his chair. He sighed as a smile crept up his face.
He would need to take another walk down the hall in order to give his heartbeat time to stop racing.
