The bullet ripped into her back, and the shock of the impact caused Dg to momentarily lose grip on her magic. Zane caught sight of brilliant blue eyes and the shortening and slight curling of her hair before the force of the rammed her into him.
Dg’s focus swam as a searing pain spread down her back. "Cain." She screamed brokenly before she slipped into darkness.
Zane tried not to grimace when she screamed for Wyatt Cain. It made sense though. He had been right he was ushering about Princess Dg, and the truth came out when she was in danger. The princess wanted Cain, he was nothing but a fill in. Of course there was the fact all he deserved was her hatred and disgust, but he preferred to part ways in good will. He didn’t want her to know who he was.
Zane glanced back up to where the bandits had stopped in horror. They realized they had just shot the princess, and even bandits had no wish to harm the hero of the realm. "She needs a doctor. Now." He only hoped that in all the chaos no one would recognize him. Bending at the knees he gathered her into his arms. He would make sure she lived, and then he would find a way to safely deliver her back to Cain. He didn’t deserve Dg. Maybe, just maybe he would make it out with his life. Not that his life was worth much, but who would listen to him when he said he really hadn’t wanted to do it.?
*~*~*
Cain sprang from his sleep sweat coating him. He could have sworn he heard Dg scream his name. He caught sight of his lieutenant fidgeting standing next to him. Cain stood his eyes biting with coldness. "Report."
"There has been no, um, reports of sightings of the princess."
Cain nearly foamed at the mouth. "No one has seen her? How the hell is that possible? If you weren’t so incompetent we would have had her by now! She doesn’t know the Oz, she can’t possibly just disappear!"
The lieutenant tried not to pee his pants. "I-"
"Get lost." Cain growled.
Glitch came up beside him. "You shouldn’t take your anger out on them just because your worried about Dg."
Cain turned to scowl at one of his few friends. Glitch had opted not to replace his brain, and Cain was secretly glad. Raw had helped his recover most of his memories So he didn’t glitch as much, but he was still the same old Glitch. "It’s been days. Anything could have happened to her."
"Dg’s strong, and she is resourceful. I don’t doubt that when you find her she’ll be perfectly fine."
"I’m going to find her. I swear I will."
Glitch smiled slowly. "I never doubted you would. It’s what’s going to happen after you find her that I’m worried about."
*~*~*
"Cain." Dg murmured writhing on the make-shift bed in pain "CAIN!"
"Hold her down! I need to get the bullet out!" The doctor ordered and Zane strived to obey, but every time Dg called out for Cain it ripped the whole in his heart bigger and bigger.
"Who the hell is this Cain fellow she keeps shouting for?" The doctor questioned his forehead wrinkling with concentration.
"Hard to explain." Zane muttered turning his face away.
"Hey, wasn’t he one of the fellows that helped her save the kingdom?"
"Think so."
"Hm, she must care an awful lot about him. Where are you two headed?"
Zane peered up at him. "Does it really matter? Please just get the bullet out of her."
*~*~*
Dg awoke with a start and a moan of pain. "Zane?"
Zane shifted closer and took her hand. "Right here darhlin."
"What happened?" She asked groggily.
"Bandits attacked, bullet managed to hit you. When they realized who you were they set right to work patching you up. The doctor took the bullet out of you, and then healed you with magic. He said all that would be left would be a light scar and some residual pain."
"How long?
"How long what?"
"Did you know who I was."
Zane smiled slightly. "Sometimes your eye color would waver. That and your one of a kind, even with a disguise you have a uniqueness about you."
"Where are we?"
"Once the doctor made sure you were going to live they dropped us off at a close by cave and departed. Guess they didn’t want to be caught traveling with a runaway princess."
Dg smiled thinly and gingerly stood. She glanced around for her coat, and found Zane dangling it out for her. Her coat was destroyed. Blood coated and a bullet hole in the back. She shrugged it on anyway. "I’m not going back Zane, and you can’t make me."
Zane smiled and stood. "I haven’t said anything thus far about you returning, but don’t you think your parents, not to mention Wyatt Cain, might be wondering were you are?"
"My parents? My parents are robots, and Wyatt Cain doesn’t care what happens to me. I don’t want him anywhere near me."
Zane wanted to argue the point, but he didn’t comment. He was going to have to figure out a way to get her back into Cain’s protection. Without her knowing of his betrayal. "Where do you propose on heading now? Don’t think I’m going to let you wander off on your own."
Dg glared at him. "I don’t need your pity or your help. Don’t treat me like a child." Spinning she stomped out of the cave and ignored the stabs of pain in her back. She was blinded momentarily by the light, but when her eyesight cleared she wished to god it hadn’t.
"Hello kiddo."
